Ophthalmologist or Optometrist?

Many people wonder what the difference is between then two. There are several differences between these two types of eye care professionals, including how they can help you.

Optometrists have the title O.D., which stands for Optometric Doctor, and have attended 4 years of post-graduate training in eye care. Optometrists are often thought of when you want new glasses or contact lenses, yet they are also licensed to treat ocular disease and prescribe medications.

Ophthalmologists can either be an M.D. (medical doctor) or a D.O. (which is a doctor of osteopathic medicine). After their 4-year medical degree, they take an additional 4 years of eye care training. Often, as with Dr. Anderson-Weiss and Dr. Shapiro, they take an additional 1 or 2 year Fellowship program in a specific part of the eye.

Ophthalmologists are licensed to perform eye surgery and other treatments, along with any treatments an optometrist can do.

Which is right for you? If you have healthy eyes and need routine care, an optometrist can provide everything you need! If you need surgery or complex disease management, then your best bet is an ophthalmologist.
